A Brief History
1962, David Ristau graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Accounting. He soon went to work as a Revenue
Agent for the IRS. After four years, he was transferred from the San Francisco Bay Area to Modesto. David had requested
the transfer because he realized that while owning a home in San Francisco was prohibitive, Modesto was
affordable. His wage would remain the same. It was the right choice for the young family man.
David continued to work for the
IRS in Modesto until he was offered a position, three years later, as a public accountant with Arthur Kalunian.
David accepted the offer and worked for Mr. Kalunian until 1972, when he opened the doors to his own accounting
wasn't long before David outgrew his first office at 1400 K Street, and moved to 324 Burney Street. Judie Brimmer
and Keith Cherry joined David on Burney Street and the practice continued to grow. In 1979, Ristau & Co. migrated
to our current location at 101 College Avenue at the corner of College and Needham, in downtown Modesto. In 2007, Ryan Root
joined the firm, becoming a partner in 2016.
After a lifetime
of tax preparation, David met with clients for the last time in 2018. With a few tearful goodbyes to the clients and staff
he'd grown to love like family, Dave said, "Keith, Judie and Ryan are the backbone of our firm. I was just smart
enough to hire them and get out of their way."
